Paddling through the still waters of Lake Huron, a group of children and parents from Mackinac Island enjoyed a sunrise kayak trip to Round Island early Monday morning, August 29. The kayak excursion was coordinated by the Mackinac Island Recreation Department and open to students from second to 12th grade.

The trip was held in conjunction with Great Turtle Kayak Tours. Kayak tours owner Paul Spata and two other guides met the students at the business’ launch in Haldimand Bay at 5:45 a.m.

From there, they paddled to the East Breakwall, then the green buoy in the Round Island Passage, and on to Round Island. The path was the quickest way across the shipping channel, said recre- ation director Mary Patay, who organized the trip.

Once they made it to Round Island, the group made breakfast and explored before heading back to Mackinac Island. They returned at about 8:15 a.m.

Dr. Patay attended the trip along with Lakelyn Bunker, Asher Topham, Aidan Ogle, Lilly Parrish, Enzo Pulte, Hugo Pulte, Tatiana Durantez, Izzy Nitzschke, Kyle Nitzschke, Otillia Styburski, Mabel Styburski, Hannah Styburski, and Deb Styburski.
